High Court Snubs Calif. Appeal In Inmate Health Care Suits

Law360, New York (October 15, 2013, 1:45 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to touch an order directing California to spring roughly 9,000 inmates from state prisons by the end of the year to bring medical care for putative classes of remaining prisoners into compliance with Eighth Amendment standards.

In a one-line order, the high court said it lacked jurisdiction to hear Gov. Jerry Brown’s appeal of an order directing the state to reduce the population of its prisons to 137.5 percent of their designed capacity by a December deadline.
