Disney, Sony Seek Escape From 'Step Up' Soundtrack Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (October 21, 2013, 7:50 PM EDT) -- Sony Music Entertainment Inc., The Walt Disney Co., singer Wyclef Jean and others urged a California federal judge Monday to toss a copyright suit over alleged unauthorized sampling of the rap song “Bumpin' Bus Stop,” saying the composer's heirs had not plausibly alleged that they owned the registered recording of the song.

Sony and its co-defendants argued that no copyright in David Pryor's 1974 master recording of the song was ever registered and Private Stock Records owned the rights to a 1975 recording, which it licensed...
