Cardiologist Gets 6 Years, $19M Sentence For Health Fraud

Law360, New York (November 20, 2013, 7:42 PM EST) -- A New Jersey cardiologist behind the largest health care fraud scheme in the state’s history was ordered Wednesday to pay $19 million in restitution, the same amount fraudulently billed to Medicare and other insurers, and to serve more than six years in prison.

Jose Katz was hit with the massive restitution order and 78 months in prison after pleading guilty in April before U.S. District Judge Jose Linares to a count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and a count of Social Security fraud. The...
