Pagan Group Wins Property Tax Exemption On Appeal

Law360, New York (November 25, 2013, 4:29 PM EST) -- A New York appeals court on Thursday overturned a lower court's denial of property tax exemptions to a Pagan religious institution, saying the lower courts had improperly established a threshold amount of religious activity required to satisfy the exemption.

In a unanimous opinion, the appeals court found that the religious institution had used the property primarily for religious and charitable purposes, citing the group's daily worship services, outdoor temple and housing program that benefited spirituality-seeking guests in a 12-bedroom home.
