Shell Subsidiary Off The Hook In Human Rights Case

Law360, New York (March 6, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A judge dismissed two lawsuits against Shell Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria over the company's alleged role in human rights abuses in Nigeria in the 1990s, saying Tuesday that an American court didn't have jurisdiction over them.

The lawsuits, part of a group of four related cases, were filed in 2004 and 2006 by Nigerian citizens who protested the exploration and expansion of SPDC, Shell's development arm in Nigeria. They said they had been violently attacked by Nigerian armed forces and alleged that SPDC cooperated with...
