Closed-Door Pension Talks Violate Sunshine Law, Judge Rules

Law360, Miami (January 2, 2014, 7:05 PM EST) -- A Florida judge on Tuesday ruled that Jacksonville city officials violated the state's open-government laws by negotiating a pension deal for city police officers and firefighters during mediation that was closed to the public.

Judge Waddell A. Wallace III granted summary judgment in favor of the Florida Times-Union on one count of its suit against Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and the Jacksonville Police and Fire Pension Fund Board of Trustees, ruling that the defendants violated the state's Sunshine Law with the secret negotiations.
