Assurant Gets Force-Placed Insurance Suit Trimmed

Law360, New York (January 14, 2014, 5:54 PM EST) -- A Pennsylvania federal judge on Tuesday trimmed a proposed class action accusing an Assurant Inc. subsidiary of participating in a scheme to foist force-placed hazard insurance policies on homeowners who did not want them, saying the court lacked jurisdiction to hear unjust enrichment claims.

Plaintiff Xi Chen Lauren alleges Assurant, its subsidiary American Security Insurance Co. and PNC Bank NA worked together to make mortgage holders pay for the force-placed hazard policies, which resulted in inflated costs to the borrower.
