Houston Sues To Rein In Firefighter Pension Contributions

Law360, Houston (January 22, 2014, 5:29 PM EST) -- The city of Houston said Wednesday in a suit filed in Texas state court that it should have more control over its annual contribution to a $3 billion public firefighters’ pension plan, which it says is currently being funded at an unsustainable level.

A state law that requires Houston to contribute to the pension a minimum annual amount equal to 18 percent of total membership payroll plus any additional amounts demanded by the pension’s board violates the Texas Constitution, according to the suit. The city says...
