7th Circ. Says FMLA Covers Vegas Trip With Ill Relative

Law360, Los Angeles (January 28, 2014, 9:48 PM EST) -- The Seventh Circuit ruled Tuesday that a former Chicago Park District employee was entitled to take leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act so she could take her dying mother to Las Vegas, saying the end-of-life trip qualified as care.

Affirming an Illinois federal judge's decision, the appeals court said employees can take up to 12 workweeks of leave to provide physical and psychological care for a seriously ill spouse, son, daughter or parent — regardless of geographical location.
