NRDC, Others Sue Feds Over Navy Sonar Training

Law360, Los Angeles (January 29, 2014, 4:51 PM EST) -- The National Resources Defense Council Inc. on Wednesday filed suit against the U.S. federal government, accusing it of illegally permitting the U.S. Navy to run training exercises using sonar and explosions off the coast of southern California and Hawaii.

The sonar levels permitted by the National Marine Fisheries Service would trigger an 11-fold increase in the damage done to marine life, according to the NRDC. Furthermore, the rule permitting the explosives and sonar drills was unlawfully written, the non-profit claimed in its suit.
