Texas Court Trims Cop's Defamation Suit Against Union

Law360, Dallas (January 31, 2014, 9:19 PM EST) -- A Texas appeals court on Friday dismissed most of a defamation suit by a former employee against police union Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas under a state free speech law, rejecting a constitutional challenge to the law.

Partially reversing a trial judge’s order, the Third Court of Appeals dismissed several claims brought against the union by Mike Sheffield, a former CLEAT field service representative and Austin police officer who claimed CLEAT officials falsely accused him of committing criminal acts.
