Smartphone Anti-Theft 'Kill Switch' Effort Goes National

Law360, New York (February 13, 2014, 4:27 PM EST) -- A push by prosecutors in New York, California and elsewhere to force mobile device giants such as Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. to implement “kill switch” technology to fight rampant theft went national Thursday when senators, including Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar, introduced the federal Smartphone Theft Prevention Act.

The legislation, also backed by Sens. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. and Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, would require those companies and other giants such as Samsung Corp. to install technology that lets victims of cell phone theft keep...
