Japan's Rakuten Puts Up $900M For Chat App Maker Viber

Law360, New York (February 14, 2014, 11:03 AM EST) -- Rakuten Inc. will shell out $900 million to add messaging and calling application maker Viber Media Ltd. to its portfolio as the Japanese e-commerce giant works to become a global Internet services company, according to a Friday statement.

Under the terms of the deal, Rakuten will take all of Viber’s outstanding voting stock and then issue new shares, according to a statement.
