HealthPort Bilked Patients With Med Record Fees, Suit Says

Law360, New York (March 10, 2014, 3:41 PM EDT) -- HealthPort Inc. and multiple Barnabas Health and Meridian Health hospitals in New Jersey have been hit with a putative class action alleging they violated the state's consumer fraud law by charging patients improper fees for the duplication of medical records.

Ocean County, N.J., residents Fischel Goldberg and Jerry Velasquez contend that the Alpharetta, Ga.-headquartered records management company charged each of them a $5 “certification” fee on top of other costs when a representative requested their medical records from two of the hospitals targeted in the March...
