FTC Wants Rulemaking Power For Cybersecurity Reforms

Law360, New York (March 26, 2014, 7:52 PM EDT) -- Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez advocated Wednesday for a central role for the agency in crafting data protection and breach reporting standards in testimony before a Senate panel critical to the raging debate over proposed national cybersecurity laws.

At a Senate Commerce Committee hearing examining the various proposals percolating in Congress to impose nationwide information security rules and unify the patchwork of state-level data breach notification requirements, Ramirez said that any legislation should empower the FTC with Administrative Procedure Act rulemaking authority.
