Waste Connections Wins Initial Nod On Class OT Deal

By Brandon Lowrey (April 16, 2014, 10:31 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday granted preliminary approval to a Waste Connections Inc. settlement with a putative class of more than 1,200 current and former workers who alleged the solid waste services company violated state labor laws by failing to provide meal breaks and pay overtime and minimum wages.

U.S. District Judge Dean D. Pregerson issued the order Tuesday, conditionally certifying a settlement class and putting the trash and recycling collection and disposal company on track to pay up to $900,000 to avert a trial.

Tuesday's order winds down a "fiercely litigated" case, sparing the plaintiffs from the legal hurdles...
