DOJ Green-Lights Regal, Consolidated Cinema Deal

Law360, New York (April 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has approved Regal Cinemas Inc.'s proposed $210 million acquisition of Consolidated Theatres Holding GP, provided the two chains resolve antitrust qualms by selling off four theaters in North Carolina.

As it stood, the deal would have substantially lessened competition among first-run commercial movie theaters in areas of Charlotte, Raleigh and Asheville, N.C., resulting in higher ticket prices and decreased quality viewing experience for moviegoers, the DOJ said. The department filed both a complaint and a proposed settlement Tuesday in the U.S....
