New Study Ties Biofilms To Jaw Deterioration

Law360, New York (May 5, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A new study has suggested that microbial biofilms are to blame for a painful side effect associated with osteoporosis drugs like Fosamax, which is currently at the center of a massive product liability battle.

Researchers at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry recently linked the biofilms, a mix of bacteria and extracellular material, to osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients taking bone treatment drugs known as bisphosphonates.
