Fred Leighton Tries To Wrest Jewels From Merrill

Law360, New York (May 7, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Bankrupt Fred Leighton Holding Inc. has requested that Merrill Lynch Mortgage Capital give back over $77 million worth of jewelry, accusing the financial giant of plotting with famed auction house Christie's Inc. to hold the special collection ransom.

On Monday, the beleaguered jeweler asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York to sanction Merrill and Christie's, arguing that the duo should be held in contempt for refusing to return the collection consisting of 83 “museum-quality pieces” to Fred Leighton, according to court...
