By Kira Lerner (August 12, 2014, 1:18 PM EDT) -- Amtrak sued nearly two dozen insurers Monday in District of Columbia federal court seeking coverage for a wide range of claims over its environmental cleanup obligations and liability for exposing individuals to asbestos and other health hazards, just three days after a group of insurers filed a suit seeking to avoid coverage.
The government-backed railroad service seeks a declaratory judgment finding that the insurers, including Certain Underwriters at Lloyd's of London, are obligated to cover its defense and liability costs under numerous liability policies issued in the 1970s and '80s for various property damage claims, which total at least $40 million,...
