Medtronic Shells Out $75M In Qui Tam Deal

Law360, New York (May 22, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Medtronic Inc. will pay $75 million plus interest to settle a False Claims Act suit that accused Kyphon Inc. (which Medtronic bought in November 2007) of engaging in a seven-year scheme that led to Medicare paying for inpatient spinal surgeries as opposed to less costly outpatient treatments.

The $75 million deal means the end of the suit that Craig Patrick and Charles M. Bates III filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York in October 2005, Medtronic spokeswoman Marybeth Thorsgaard said...
