Knight Ridder Deal Draws DOJ Scrutiny

Law360, New York (March 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- As bidders begin to line up for the dozen Knight Ridder newspapers said to be up for grabs, the U.S. Department of Justice has begun an antitrust review of McClatchy Co.’s pending purchase of the number-two newspaper chain.

The Justice Department confirmed last week that it is scrutinizing the agreement, which would vault California newspaper chain McClatchy into the upper echelon of the industry.

McClatchy announced the $4.5 billion deal last month, while revealing that it intended to unload 12 of Knight Ridder’s 32 daily newspapers....
