Ninth Circuit Solves Pink Panther Copyright Caper

Law360 (June 19, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal appeals court has affirmed a decision against the heirs of the man who created the Pink Panther and granted copyright ownership to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed the trial court’s grant of summary judgment to MGM on Thursday.

Maurice Richlin, who wrote what eventually became the Pink Panther film, never co-owned nor co-authored the motion picture itself, precluding any claims he or his heirs might have on its copyright, the court said....
