Knight Ridder Bidding War Fuels Antitrust Concerns

Law360 (April 20, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- High-rolling offers have started streaming in for the dozen Knight Ridder newspapers slated to be auctioned off, even as the U.S. Department of Justice and the California attorney general’s office are carrying out antitrust reviews of McClatchy Co.’s pending purchase of the number-two newspaper chain.

The $4.5 billion deal, announced last month, would vault California newspaper chain McClatchy into the upper echelon of the industry.
