Lawyers Warn Cos. To Steer Clear Of E-Verify

Law360, New York (July 17, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently mandated the use of E-Verify by federal contractors, but the otherwise voluntary program to screen unauthorized workers faces big legal challenges, leaving lawyers leery of advising employers to sign on.

An Arizona statute requiring companies to use the controversial E-Verify to check the immigration status of employees is being examined by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and states that have followed Arizona's lead are keeping their laws on ice.
