AmEx Sued Over Navy-Developed IT Security Patent

Law360, New York (July 18, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The exclusive licensee of a patent owned by the U.S. Navy has sued American Express Co., accusing the credit card company of infringing the patent, which relates to a way to send sensitive information over the Internet securely.

Network Signatures Inc. filed the lawsuit on July 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

It said that the patent, called “Intermediate network authentication,” was developed by the Naval Research Laboratory, a research and development organization that is affiliated with the Navy. NRL...
