11th Circ. Won't Revive Venezuelan Media Mogul's $1B Suit
Law360, New York (May 7, 2015, 4:47 PM EDT) -- The Eleventh Circuit on Thursday refused to revive a $1 billion suit brought against Venezuela by a prominent media and banking businessman granted asylum after his country allegedly engaged in a pattern of persecution against him, finding that the foreign government was entitled to sovereign immunity.
The three judge panel affirmed the dismissal of suit brought by Nelson Mezerhane — a founder of newspaper Diario El Globo and news network Globovisión Tele CA — who claimed that under the leadership of former President Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan government mounted a campaign to strip him of his assets.
