USPTO Stalls Dell Bid To Trademark 'Cloud Computing'

Law360 (August 12, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In the wake of an uproar over a bid by Dell Inc. to trademark the term “cloud computing,” the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has thrown up a roadblock, withdrawing an earlier decision that gave the tech giant preliminary approval of its application.

According to USPTO records, Dell's “notice of allowance” on its application to trademark the term “cloud computing” was canceled last week.

Jess Blackburn, a spokesman for Dell, declined comment Tuesday on the latest action by the USPTO.
