Calif. TV Writers Win Access To Writers Guild Data

Law360, New York (August 19, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A California appeals court has granted television writers access to the demographic information of Writers Guild members in the latest chapter of an eight-year legal battle over alleged age discrimination.

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal of California overturned a Superior Court decision that sustained the objections of 7,700 Writers Guild members who refused to share demographic data.

The writers' “compelling need” for their colleagues' ages and other data to prove systematic discrimination outweighs the Writers Guild members' privacy concerns, the appellate court ruled.
