Tate & Lyle Sues Chinese Makers Of Splenda Rival

Law360 (May 23, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- British industrial ingredients firm Tate & Lyle PLC has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Chinese chemical companies and U.S. importers, accusing the group of violating its right to a manufacturing process for the popular sweetener Splenda.

Some of the 32 patents for sucralose, the chemical name for Splenda, have already expired, but Tate & Lyle’s patent for certain manufacturing processes remains valid. The lawsuit comes as rival sucralose products have begun finding their way into U.S. stores, such as Wal-Mart.
