Calif. Orders Up Nutrition Labels For Chain Menus

Law360, New York (September 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Tuesday the country's first state mandate requiring restaurant chains to post nutritional information in their menus, as part of California's strategy to tackle obesity.

The landmark law — SB1420, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima — requires restaurant chains with 20 or more branches to post information such as calories, carbohydrates and sodium on their menus by January 2009.

Chains must also distribute nutritional brochures through their drive-through windows by July 2009.
