DOJ Has Beef With Meatpacking Merger

Law360, New York (October 20, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Justice Department has filed a civil antitrust lawsuit aiming to block beef-packing company JBS SA from acquiring National Beef Packing Co. LLC, saying the deal would reduce competition and result in higher beef prices for consumers.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, alleged that the proposed merger, if allowed to proceed, would complete a “fundamental restructuring of the United States beef packing industry,” by eliminating one of JBS' major competitors and increasing the company's share...
