SEC Enforcement Actions Skyrocket

Law360, New York (October 22, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission launched 671 total enforcement actions, the second-highest number in its history, in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, the agency announced Wednesday.

The agency also said that the number of insider trading and market manipulation suits it brought shot up by more than 25 percent and 45 percent, respectively, compared to the previous year.

“The SEC's role in policing the markets and protecting investors has never been more critical,” said Linda Chatman Thomsen, the SEC's Enforcement Division director....
