Smithfield Settles RICO Suit Over Union Campaign

Law360 (October 27, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Smithfield Foods Inc. and a union have struck a deal in a lawsuit related to a bitter, long-running fight to unionize a Smithfield pork processing plant in North Carolina, paving the way for the end of the union's campaign against the company, and the beginning of possible union representation.

Judge Robert E. Payne of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia signed off on an order approving the settlement, which remains under seal, on Monday.
