More Witnesses Called To Assess Telecom Settlements

Law360 (July 12, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Skeptical of the government’s efforts to resolve antitrust issues in the recent baby bell mergers, a judge asked the Department of Justice on Wednesday to prove the settlements in both cases adequately addressed all competition concerns.

At a hearing convened to examine the already approved deals between SBC Communications Inc. and AT&T and Verizon and MCI, Judge Emmet Sullivan said that he would call additional witnesses to assess whether the DOJ’s settlements in the mergers were in the public interest.
