DVD Vending Companies Tangle Over Kiosk Patents

By Samuel Howard (October 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Competing DVD vending machine companies have taken their rivalry to court, with DVDPlay Inc. exchanging lawsuits with Redbox Automated Retail LLC, and launching another action against Coinstar E-Payment Services Inc. over automated kiosk technology.

DVDPlay lodged a suit Tuesday against Redbox in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, claiming its competitor infringes a patent related to automated DVD vending machines. An identical suit in the same court goes after Coinstar, which owns Video Vending New York Inc.

Redbox and Coinstar infringe DVDPlay's U.S. Patent Number 7,444,296 by making and marketing automated DVD kiosk systems, according to the complaints....
