Unwired Planet Wins UK Patent Case Against Phone Makers

Law360, New York (March 22, 2016, 9:57 PM EDT) -- The United Kingdom High Court ruled Tuesday that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. infringed a patent on 2G wireless technology held by licensing company Unwired Planet International Ltd.

Following a February trial, the third in a series of trials pitting Unwired against the cellphone manufacturers, Justice Colin Birss of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales found that Unwired Planet’s European Patent 1,230,818 is valid, essential to the industry's 2G standard and had been infringed.

The patent, which was granted in November 2008, covers technology that enables mobile devices to connect to the Internet....
