Judge Upholds $521M Eolas Verdict Vs. Microsoft

Law360, New York (January 14, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on Wednesday upheld a jury's $521 million verdict against Microsoft Corp. in a patent suit brought by Eolas Technologies Inc.

Judge James B. Zagel found that Microsoft had infringed on Eolas Technologies Inc.'s patent on the embedding and invoking of interactive applications, such as plug-ins and applets, in web browsers.

"While I am not entirely comfortable with the large size of the judgment, it is not my comfort that matters," Zagel wrote in his opinion....
