AES Settles Dominican Republic Coal Ash-Dumping Suit

By Jeff Montgomery (April 4, 2016, 3:31 PM EDT) -- AES Corp. has reportedly reached a settlement in principle that headed off the first in a potential series of trials in Delaware on claims that coal ash dumped by company subsidiaries in 2003 and 2004 caused birth defects, stillbirths and other injuries in a Dominican Republic coastal community.

Although neither company officials nor attorneys responded to repeated requests for information about the case in recent days, a Delaware Superior Court official relayed word of the development on Monday morning after a scheduled two-week jury trial failed to start as proposed in Wilmington.
