DOJ Blesses California Newspaper Purchase

Law360, New York (July 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has closed an antitrust investigation into MediaNews Group Inc.’s acquisition of the Contra Costa Times and the Mercury News after finding that the sale will not substantially reduce competition.

The DOJ’s antitrust division focused on the transaction’s potential effect on competition in the sale of local daily newspapers and newspaper advertising in northern California’s “east bay” region.
