States, Localities Take Larger Role In Telecom Merger Reviews

Law360, Washington (May 25, 2016, 8:19 PM EDT) -- As New York regulators weigh the proposed tie-up of Altice NV and Cablevision Systems Corp., experts said telecommunications deals are receiving increased scrutiny at the state and local level that adds complexity to the often-uncertain merger process.

State and local regulators in recent years have sought more involvement in merger reviews, with larger and more progressive states taking a particularly close look at benefits and potential conditions. That's due at least in part to public perceptions of industry consolidation, and it also makes it critical for companies to prepare for every level of review, telecom attorneys said.
