Trader Joe’s Sues Rival Over 'Trader John's' Store

Law360, New York (January 12, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- Organic supermarket chain Trader Joe’s Co. has sued Gristede’s Foods Inc. for trademark infringement after the rival grocer commenced plans to open a “knockoff” supermarket called Trader John’s just three blocks from the only Manhattan Trader Joe’s.

In a complaint filed on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Trader Joe’s claims that Gristede’s “gutted, renovated and renamed” its supermarket on 5 W. 14th St. in Manhattan “to make it appear more similar to Trader Joe’s.”
