2nd Circ. Affirms UN Immunity In Haiti Cholera Suit
Law360, Los Angeles (August 18, 2016, 9:03 PM EDT) -- The Second Circuit on Thursday told a Haitian advocacy group that it cannot sue the United Nations over a cholera outbreak that has ravaged the nation since 2010, though the global relations entity separately admitted it is reviewing the scope of its role in the outbreak.
The Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, which is representing the plaintiffs in the action, has sought to hold the United Nations responsible for the outbreak for permitting personnel from Nepal, where cholera is an epidemic, to travel to Haiti and allowing poor sanitation practices that let the disease spread.
