LA Sues Macy's, Other Retailers Over False Price Ads

Law360, Los Angeles (December 9, 2016, 2:02 PM EST) -- The Los Angeles city attorney slapped J.C. Penney, Sears, Kohl’s and Macy’s with California state court suits Thursday alleging that the national retailers misrepresent the original or regular price of products in order to make the sale price look like a substantial discount.

The four substantially similar complaints contend that the retailers use so-called false reference pricing to increase sales by tricking shoppers into thinking they’re getting a better deal than they actually are, a practice the suits say violates California’s Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law.
