Paramount Settles 'Star Trek' Fan Film Copyright Suit

Law360, New York (January 20, 2017, 2:41 PM EST) -- The producers of an unauthorized "Star Trek" fan film have reached a settlement with Paramount Pictures and CBS to end a closely watched copyright infringement lawsuit over the project, the parties announced Friday.

The deal comes two weeks after a federal judge shot down one of the producers' key defenses, ruling that the “Axanar” project — a short online video and a planned feature-length "Star Trek" fan fiction film funded by $1.1 million in small donations — was not protected by the fair use doctrine. A trial had been scheduled to start later this month.
