Dem Lawmakers Urge FCC Action On Cellphone Cybersecurity

Law360, Washington (March 28, 2017, 8:05 PM EDT) -- Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., in a letter on Tuesday asked the Federal Communications Commission to move quickly to take on "fundamental security threats" to cellphones, saying that self-regulation by the industry isn't working and the vulnerabilities are clear.

The FCC has not typically made cybersecurity a major focus, the lawmakers said, but there are flaws such as those in Signaling System 7, or SS7, a phone interconnection system. The recommendations of a recent working group report on the SS7 issue should be implemented, they added.
