California Probes Another McClatchy Newspaper Sale

Law360, New York (August 25, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Although the California state attorney general’s office has decided not to pursue any antitrust enforcement action over McClatchy’s sale of two newspapers to MediaNews Group Inc., it plans to take a closer look at a related deal between the companies and Hearst Corp.

Privately held MediaNews Group bought the San Jose Mercury News and the Contra Costa Times earlier this month from McClatchy, the second-largest U.S. newspaper publisher that picked up the newspapers in its $4 billion acquisition of Knight Ridder Inc. in June.
