How The Trump Administration Lost Its Sanctuary City Case

Law360, New York (May 2, 2017, 1:53 PM EDT) -- Last week, a federal court blocked President Donald Trump from enforcing an executive order that would deny federal funds to so-called “sanctuary cities.” U.S. District Court Judge William H. Orrick granted a nationwide preliminary injunction to two California counties that argued that the withdrawal of potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds would cripple their budgets. This is the third immigration-related executive action by the new administration that has been halted by the courts.

The White House responded with an angry statement decrying the “erroneous ruling” as “unilaterally rewriting immigration policy” and a “gift” to criminal gangs, drug cartels...
