Marley Family Wins $2.4M In Trademark Infringement Case
Law360, Los Angeles (May 31, 2017, 4:33 PM EDT) -- Family members of Bob Marley will receive $2.4 million in trademark infringement damages from Jammin Java Corp., a California federal judge ruled Tuesday, finding the coffee company couldn't prove its operating expenses offset profits from unauthorized sales of Marley-branded coffee.
Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Ltd. and Hope Road Merchandising LLC, companies controlled by Marley's family members that own his intellectual property and publicity rights, sued Jammin Java after it failed to pay royalties on a long-term license for Marley-branded coffee and then continued to use Marley trademarks after a separate, short-term license ended.
