3rd-Party Funding Finding A Home In Patent Litigation

By Matthew Bultman (September 29, 2017, 4:22 PM EDT) -- In 2015, an Oregon company called AVM Technologies LLC hit Intel Corp. with a $2 billion lawsuit claiming the chip giant infringed a patent covering circuit technology. But David wasn't fighting Goliath alone.

Over the course of the two-year case it was revealed that an outside investor helped AVM finance the litigation. It's unclear how much money the funder invested, but Joseph Tran, the inventor of the patent and AVM's founder, seemed to suggest during trial it was around $2 million.

While AVM ended up losing the suit — a jury found Intel didn't infringe the patent — the case highlights...
